The Whistler Secondary School (WSS) Grade 10 boys' basketball team is headed for the South Cariboo Winter Classic Basketball Tournament from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, but they're giving back to the community also.
Having volunteered for the Whistler Food Bank during Christmas for two years, these athletes elected to serve 100 Mile House, B.C. where the tournament is being held. They've been collecting monetary and food donations outside of Nesters Grocery Store this month and will hand these items off to 100 Mile House Food Bank executive director Danny Williams on Thursday.
"Their contribution will help our efforts to provide 360 food hampers per month and 40 fresh food baskets per week for community members," revealed Williams in a press release, adding that he did not expect a visiting sports team to contribute.
Dillan Karst, WSS athletic director, said in the same release: "I am incredibly proud of our basketball team for stepping up to support the 100 Mile House Food Bank. This fundraiser is more than just giving back, it’s about building meaningful connections with communities that welcome us."
"My participation isn’t the story here," added Nesters manager Bruce Stewart. "The story is the fact that these young men recognize their privilege and are motivated to do something for others. That really impresses me."
