Repeat B.C. offender caught with loaded handgun with silencer tucked into waistband

What started out as a routine traffic stop in Mission turned into police finding a loaded gun and drugs.

A repeat offender carrying a loaded handgun with a silencer attempted to lie to police officers about his identity.

Police officers with Mission RCMP noticed a man riding an electric moped without a helmet on 2nd Avenue near Columbia Street on April 9.

When asked for identification, the man said he did not have anything on him and provided a fake name and date of birth.

Cpl. Harrison Mohr said the man did admit he lied and gave his real name.

Police learned he was a repeat offender with conditions on his release for drug trafficking charges. The man was also on probation for convictions, including carrying a concealed weapon and firearms possession.

During the interaction with the police officers, the man dropped a package of contraband cigarettes.

Once police told him he was under arrest, he admitted to having a gun.

Police found a loaded handgun with a silencer tucked into his waistband along with hundreds of dollars in cash, suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and cannabis.

"Mission RCMP highlight this as an example of how quickly a minor investigation can turn into something significant," said Mohr. "What started out as a proactive traffic stop for a basic infraction under the Motor Vehicle Act quickly led to the seizure of drugs and a loaded handgun."

A 41-year-old man from Mission has been charged with numerous offences related to weapon possession and breaching various conditions.

He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
