The library offers a variety of programs for children throughout the year. Attending story time with your child is fun and educational for both of you. Story time provides an opportunity for your child to participate and interact with other children while learning finger plays, rhymes, songs, and creative movements.
On Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m., our Children’s Librarian Linda Neumann prepares a weekly story time for pre-school aged children which offers children the chance to develop a love for stories, books, reading and libraries. It also helps to develop their listening skills and imagination. It is a time for parents to expand and create learning experiences and provide ideas, materials and techniques for use at home. For newcomers to Whistler it is a place to network socially and intellectually with other parents.
In order to prepare your child for story time, you need to let them know what they can expect to happen during story time. Talk to your child about the things he or she will do during story time. There will be stories, finger plays, puppets, games and songs. During story time for children under three year old, parents are usually expected to remain with the child and to participate in the finger plays, rhymes, songs and creative movements. Learn some finger plays yourself so you can do them at home.
If your child's attention wanders, don't fret. Allow the child the opportunity to become interested again. If, however, your child is clearly unhappy or disinterested consider removing him or her from the story circle and try again next week. You are the best judge of your child.
