Team BC is off to a flying start (pun intended) at this year's Canada Winter Games at Brookvale, P.E.I. Maya Mikkelsen and Alex Mysko both launched themselves to aerials gold on Feb. 19, the first day of competition at Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park.
After placing second in qualifying, Mikkelsen earned a total of 106.92 points with two jumps of 52.60 and 54.32. That put her more than three points clear of Sina Clegg from Calgary, Alta., who won silver (103.30). Not far behind was bronze medallist Ashley Koehler of Quebec City, Que. (103.05), while top qualifier Citrine Boychuk of Sherwood Park, Alta. settled for fourth (102.43).
Mysko took command of the men's event from start to finish. He entered the final as the top qualifier and did not disappoint with a 123.16-point effort on two jumps of 60.03 and 63.13. Calgarian Bryan Burnyeat placed second (120.46) and Maximus Gryspeerdt of Toronto, Ont. ended up third (112.21).
The 2023 Canada Winter Games will continue until March 5, bringing together 3600 athletes, managers and coaches across 20 different sports for the largest multi-sport event in the country.
