Local triathletes emerged from hibernation last week to post some excellent results at the annual North Shore Triathlon on May 21.
Although its a short course, the biking and running sections are hilly and part of the run takes place on dirt trails. Fifteen competitors from Whistler and Pemberton showed up for the race.
Each adult competitor started the day with 20 lengths of the pool for a total of 740 metres. The bike section was 18 km, and consisted of three loops of the Mount Seymour Parkway between Berkley and Mount Seymour Road. The race finished with 5 km of road and trails around the recreation centre.
Junior competitors (age 11 to 15) swam 300 metres, biked 12 km, and ran 2.5 km.
In the 11 to 15 age category, Claire Daniels and Brooke Playfair finished fifth and 15 th respectively, with times of 37 minutes 56 seconds and 47:09.
For the adults, Tracey Pope of Pemberton finished second in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 1:05:32. Whistlers Christine Suter was a close third posting a time of 1:07:56.
Dawn Weiberg-Titus finished first in the 40 to 44 age group with a time of 1:08:58. Karen Playfair and Jane Meadows also competed, finishing 10 th and 24 th with times of 1:25:28 and 1:41:00.
In the 40 to 44 mens category, Paul Suter finished sixth out of 41 competitors with a time of 1:06:08. Daniel Havens finished ninth in the same category at 1:08:12.
Cam McCullough was second in the 50 to 59 race with a time of 1:09:21. Murray Coates was seventh with 1:26:17.
In the team category, "The Ejjs" finished fourth with a combined time of 1:26:40.
Based on the level of local interest at past triathlons, Christine Suter is looking to start a Whistler triathlon club for all ages and abilities this season. More details to follow.
