Nine young athletes from the Sea to Sky Nordics Biathlon Bears recently attended the U13 Biathlon BC Championships in West Kelowna alongside more than 30 other contenders from clubs across B.C. and Washington state. Two Bears found themselves atop the podium.
Reed Murray prevailed among U13 boys during the March 12 competition. The Whistlerite distinguished himself by skiing four laps of the 700-metre course at Telemark Nordic Club in 19 minutes, 5.8 seconds and ensuring that he put his shots on target. Murray was nearly 52 seconds ahead of his teammate, runner-up Spencer Burkholder of North Vancouver (19:57.7).
The Bears had a total of six athletes in the top 10. Tate Mickelson raced to fifth (21:30.4), Max Murray ended up seventh (21:35.9) and Thomas Vseticka was right behind him in eighth (22:02.9). Weston Brealey rounded out the group in 10th (23:13.12).
Another club member, Per Mickelson, finished fifth in the mixed U11 category.
