A group of four orienteering enthusiasts from Whistler found their way to the national championships in Manitoba on Thanksgiving weekend, then found their way home with their share of the medals.
Marie-Catherine Bruno put together two excellent runs over two-days in the B.C. Orienteering Championships outside of Kamloops last month to win the women’s elite category and earn a spot in the nationals. She also beat Canadian Team Member Marta Green of Vancouver.
In Manitoba, Bruno finished second on both days of the Classic Distance competition, Oct. 6 and 7, to take the silver medal.
Bruno also competed in the Short Distance competition on Oct. 8, finishing fifth overall.
Martin Pardoe claimed his second men’s elite B.C. title in September, then finished seventh overall in the national championship Classic. He also finished 12 th in the Short Distance competition.
Adrian Zissos finished second in the provincials racing in the M35 division, then finished seventh in the Classic and fifth in the Short Distance.
Alex Kerr, a M65 competing in the veteran category, took the silver medal in the provincial championships. He did not finish the classic race at the national championships, but won a gold medal in the Short Distance.
Orienteering is also called "cunning running", as competitors have to use maps and compasses, and make calculations while on the run.
