Canadas Olympic athletes and the bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are the focus of the second annual Canadian Olympic Golf Tournament in Whistler this weekend.
About 140 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament on Aug. 14 at the Whistler Golf Club, including active and retired Olympic athletes.
"This tournament is an excellent opportunity for participants to show their support for our athletes who will compete against the best in the world in less than five months from now at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City," says Canada Olympic Association president Michael Chambers.
Net proceeds from the golf tournament will be shared by the COA Athlete Grant Program and the LegaciesNow program of the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation. The grant program helps high performance athletes with living, training and competition expenses, and LegaciesNow is working to create lasting legacies for sports and athletes in the province whether the bid is successful or not.
"Bidding for and ultimately hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games is all about creating legacies for sport development, our host communities, our province, our country and the Olympic movement," says 2010 bid CEO Don Calder. "We want to give our athletes a chance to go for gold, right here at home."
