Vernon’s Tom van Steenbergen is recovering from a successful surgery following a serious crash causing him to break multiple bones during Friday's Red Bull Rampage downhill mountain biking competition.
The crash came seconds after he completed a front-flip which netted him the award for Best Trick at the event. On the next jump he crashed while attempting a back flip.
Van Steenbergen posted an update to his Instagram page on Sunday, Oct. 17, with photos of himself holding up his ‘Best Trick 2021’ trophy with his fiancée and dog. On Saturday, Oct. 16, van Steenbergen went through an eight-hour surgery.
In his Instagram post, van Steenbergen said his left hip was a lot worse than expected and plates and screws had to be inserted.
“Can’t believe I held my trophy up for the first time in the hospital bed. I’ll be back for my redemption…” wrote van Steenbergen.
“I’m so lucky to have @kiannahamilton. I can’t wait to marry you! You are my rock.”
“Love reading all your guys’ messages.”
WARNING: The video shows the forward flip and then immediately after shows the crash that injured Steenbergen.
