Whistler Film Festival unveils 2024 Borsos Competition

This year's jurors include Tatiana Maslany, Cory Bowles and Tantoo Cardinal

The Whistler Film Festival (WFF) has announced 12 Canadian feature films competing in its prestigious Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature.
 
Now in its 21st year, the Borsos Competition (named after the legendary Canadian filmmaker Philip Borsos) awards a $35,000 cash and in-kind prize for Best Canadian Feature, making it the second-largest in the country. The event is presented by the Directors Guild of Canada-BC.
 
"The Borsos Competition is a fundamental part of the Whistler Film Festival’s DNA, and Canadian feature films are at the heart of it all,” says Robin Smith, WFF Director of Film Programming, in a press release. “It was a super competitive year, with over 100 films vying for a slot. We are extremely proud and excited to be announcing 12 films this year. Each brings a fresh, fun, and fearless perspective illustrated by the amazing talents bubbling up through the Canadian film landscape."

Movies in the running are as follows: Aberdeen by Eva Thomas and Ryan Cooper, Naomi Jaye's Darkest MiriamHunting Matthew Nichols from Markian Tarasiuk and Sean Harris Oliver, Kryptic by Kourtney Roy and Paul Bromley, Darcy Waite's Lucky Strikes, the Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr offering Phoenixes, Please, After You by Rob Michaels and Amir Kahnamouee, Really Happy Someday by J Stevens and Breton Lalama, Melanie Oates' Sweet Angel Baby, The Birds Who Fear Death by Sanjay Patel, Meryam Joobeur's Who Do I Belong To and Sway from Charlie Hamilton and Zachary Ramelan.

Emmy award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated actress Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) headlines a Borsos jury that also includes Order of Canada member Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon, Stumptown) and Cory Bowles (Trailer Park Boys, Law and Order: Organized Crime). 

"We are honoured to be welcoming such an accomplished and illustrious jury to the Whistler Film Festival for the Borsos Competition this year,” added Smith. “Each juror has consistently proven themselves to be strong advocates of Canadian cinema and have expressed a deep and strong passion in participating at our festival this year. We are thrilled to be working with such great talents."
