All the permits are now in place for the Sea to Sky Gondola project. Jayson Faulkner, the project's general manager, reported that he Ministry of Environment issued a Park Use Permit for the gondola on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Faulkner said the project team is excited to have the certificate.
"We can now move on to the next stages of our project, which includes some of our more detailed programming, facilities and amenities design as well as finances," said Faulkner.
The project is expected to create more than 60 person years of construction employment and the team required to operate the business has been estimated at 50 full-time staff members.
The proposed lift is to be constructed through a provincial park between the Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls. The project plans call for a detachable lift system with eight-passenger enclosed cabins that will take visitors to a scenic top-station 823 metres (2,700 feet) above Howe Sound.
The park permit was issued despite the concerns of a group called Friends of the Stawamus Chief. The group opposes the gondola and has been critical of the provincial government's approval process for the project.
