The Conservation Officer Service (COS) is warning hikers on the Rainbow Lake Alpine Trail to be vigilant after they received a report of a possible grizzly bear sighting on Friday, May 31.
"The bear was feeding on natural attractants and did not display defensive behaviour," a bear alert from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) reads.
Trail users are encouraged to travel in groups and make noise as they walk; always carry bear spray and know how to use it; watch for signs of bears such as scat; avoid hiking at dawn or dusk; and respect all posted trail closures.
If you see a bear, don't approach it. Instead, keep your distance and back away slowly.
Last summer, the RMOW closed the Sproatt Alpine Network and the Rainbow Lake Trail after two incidents of human-wildlife conflict with a grizzly bear.
COS asks the public to report bear sightings by calling 1-877-952-7277.
