Whistler’s own fantasy home, informally known as The Mushroom House, was sold this past April. The selling price was a reported $3.5 million.
The three-bedroom, three-bathroom creation by Whistler artist Zube Aylward was put on the market in 2003 at an asking price of $5 million.
The name of the buyer hasn't been made public, and neither Aylward nor real estate agent Rob Palm were available to comment on the house’s sale.
The house has won acclaim from the architectural community for its unique design. In fact, Aylward constructed the exterior based on the glacial formations found around Emerald Estates, and the interior based on the anatomy of a tree, with a sauna in the roots and a bedroom in the second-level canopy.
The home was completed in 2002, after almost 25 years of work.
Throughout its brief history, the 3,000 square foot residence has been dubbed such names as “The Hobbit House” and “Bedrock” for its resemblance to a creation out of a Tolkien or Lewis novel.
