Whistler is paying tribute to a volunteer, mentor and friend after losing a four-day battle in intensive care at St. Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver.
Dr. Ken Nickerson, 85, was injured on Friday, March 26 when the northbound vehicle he was a passenger in drifted off the Upper Levels highway in West Vancouver and collided with a concrete barrier. The vehicle flipped over, finally coming to a stop in a ditch just north of the Cypress Bowl Road exit.
Nickerson's wife Shirley, 76, was treated and released the same day.
Nickerson, who had a heart attack following the crash, was placed in critical care. He died on Tuesday.
A retired obstetrician, Nickerson was a Village Host and Mountain Host, a member of Whistler Rotary and a member of the Mature Action Committee (MAC).
Nickerson practiced in Vancouver, but started to spend his free time in Whistler in the late 1960s, eventually retiring to the community.
As well as his philanthropic work, Nickerson was an avid golfer and skier who was in good health at the time of his crash.
