A bear hit by traffic on the Sea to Sky Highway near Crazy Canuck Drive on Monday had to be put down by an officer, Whistler RCMP said Tuesday.
"It was hit by a vehicle and it was seriously injured, so we had to take steps to terminate him," said Cpl. Diane Blain of the Whistler RCMP.
While bears are common in the Whistler area, in recent years they have not often been hit by traffic, Blain said.
"Since I've been here in the last year this is the first time I've heard of it," she said.
"We have more deer hit on the highway than bears."
The incident serves as a reminder to drivers to be aware, Blain said.
"There are signs on the highway for people to remind them of the animals on the road...They (the animals) have unpredictable movements and they do (get) in front of cars," she said.
"Just be aware of this in areas like Whistler, Pemberton and anywhere where there's a lot of wildlife."
