With a wildfire burning above Lillooet Lake and the In-SHUCK-ch Forest Service Road, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) has issued an evacuation alert for Lillooet Lake Estates, Heather Jean Properties and other identified properties within Electoral Area C.
The alert was issued today to prepare residents to evacuate should it be necessary.
In a release, the SLRD said the fire “combined with forecast precipitation that includes the potential for heavy downpours” has created conditions that “present a risk of debris flow down the McCullock Creek drainage.”
While only certain properties have been identified as being at direct risk from the debris flow, the potential for damage to the In-SHUCK-ch FSR could prevent evacuation towards Highway 99 and Pemberton, therefore all properties in the area have been put on alert.
The SLRD noted that residents will be given as much notice as possible prior to an evacuation order, “however, conditions can change very quickly,” the release went on.
B.C.’s forest ministry advises that if heavy rain greater than five millimetres an hour occurs, or thunder and lightning is observed, to either evacuate immediately or stay indoors, preferably on an upstairs floor, or on the downhill side of the house. Do not go near the creek or investigate loud sounds.
Cateline Creek also continues to present a debris-flow risk. All residents of the area should be aware of the potential risk of debris flow during a heavy downpour.
The evacuation alert, including a map of the affected properties, can be viewed here.
