A municipal politician from a small town in Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula is facing sex-related charges.
Bruno-Pierre Godbout, a councillor in the community of Chandler, was charged this week with sexual assault, assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement and criminal harassment.
The assaults that the 36-year-old man is accused of committing are to have occurred between 2010 and 2025, and involve three alleged victims.
Police say he used his public profile as a politician to contact his alleged victims, adding that it's possible there are others.
Court records say Godbout was arrested Tuesday and is scheduled to return to court today.
Earlier this year, Godbout was charged with fraud after an investigation by the province's anticorruption unit regarding more than $10,000 in expenses filed over several months in 2021 when he served as deputy mayor of Chandler.
