After strong performances in the downhill and super-G events, Whistler Mountain Ski Club alum and Toronto native Jack Crawford landed on the podium at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday, earning himself a bronze in the alpine combined event.
According to Alpine Canada, Crawford’s third-place finish—with a total time of two minutes 32.11—is Canada’s first-ever medal in the event in the 86-year history of the Games.
It’s also Crawford’s first-ever podium at a major event.
“At the Olympics, a medal is everything,” the 24-year-old said in a release. “I feel relief. I’ve been searching for a podium on the World Cup circuit for so long, and I knew it was around the corner. Today things finally all came together.”
Johannes Strolz of Austria won gold while Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway took home the silver.
Whistler’s Broderick Thompson finished 8th, 2.77 off the pace, followed immediately by North Van’s Brodie Seger in 9th. Austria and Canada were the only two nations to place three skiers in the top nine of the event.
