Watch: Man on e-scooter ends up in fast lane on Burnaby freeway

Burnaby RCMP called it "extremely dangerous and illegal" to ride a scooter on Highway 1.

A driver who spotted a man on an electric scooter riding in the fast lane on the freeway in Burnaby wasted no time calling 911 Wednesday — then he posted a video of the incident online.

Tim, who did not provide his last name, said the dashcam footage was captured on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 7:54 p.m.

It shows the scooter travelling eastbound in the far left lane on Highway 1 beside the Grand Villa Casino with cars passing it on both sides.

Toward the end of the video, it moves toward the right lanes.

Tim said the scooter rider had likely accidentally taken the Grandview Highway HOV on ramp onto the freeway and then tried to take the Willingdon off ramp to get off.

"Whether he made it safely is undetermined as I had continued on my way out of view," Tim said in an email to the NOW.

When asked what he thought when he saw the scooter, he replied "Vancouver things."

Then he called 911.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed it got a report at about 8 p.m. Wednesday about a man riding a scooter eastbound on Highway 1.

"Police patrolled the area; however, the scooter was not located," stated an email from the detachment.

Spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj called the incident "extremely dangerous and illegal."

"It is very fortunate that this did not end tragically," he said.

Kalanj urged anyone who witnesses this type of incident to call police immediately.
