"Animals are such agreeable friends—they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms," wrote 19th century English author George Eliot.
Over a hundred years later, those words still ring true — as many pet caretakers know, animals make ideal companions, no matter how big or small they are.
The problem, according to the BC SPCA, is that even at a time with when more Canadians are saying they'd choose pets over kids, there aren't enough homes opening their doors for abandoned or abused animals.
Consider Farley, a 6-years-old male German shepherd-pit bull terrier who likes quiet evenings on the couch, or Chi Chi and Rhea, two adorable black cats. Looking for something small? What about Big Whig, a one-year-old New Zealand bunny? A trio of guinea pigs? Or even Whoopsie, the baby mouse with a dark velvet coat?

The BC SPCA's 42 locations assisted 118,917 animals in need last year. But taking care of abused or abandoned animals is only meant to be an interim step before they can find a permanent home.
This holiday season, the organization is asking British Columbians to consider this the perfect moment to introduce a new member to your household.
