Crews will soon be at work on Highway 99 at the entrance to Squamish.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure told The Squamish Chief that a $739,000 contract has been awarded to Capilano Highway Services Company for the project on Highway 99 at Cleveland Avenue.
Highway 99 will be widened to accommodate a new southbound acceleration lane from Cleveland onto the highway.
The work aims to make the intersection safer, the ministry said.
This intersection has been notorious for accidents for years. According to ICBC, between 2016 and 2020, there were 256 accidents at the intersection.
"This will help drivers safely merge with southbound highway traffic," said a ministry spokesperson in an emailed statement.
Work is expected to begin this month and be completed later this spring.
Crews will work between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and overnight.
There will be no work over the Easter long weekend.
Drivers can expect minor delays, with a construction zone speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour in effect for the duration of the work.
Safety is our Chief concern.
