RCMP will be checking for winter tires on Sea to Sky Hwy Friday

The B.C. Highway Patrol will be inspecting cars on Highway 99.

Anyone planning on travelling the Sea to Sky Highway this coming Friday better have their winter tires.

The RCMP's highway patrol in Squamish will be doing winter tire checks northbound on Highway 99 on Oct. 15, between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., wrote Cpl. Mike Halskov in an email to media.

Since the beginning of the month, it's been mandatory for any vehicles using highways to have winter tires.

These can be either tires bearing the snowflake symbol or mud and snow tires, which bear the M+S symbol.

This requirement is in force until March 31.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, police can fine drivers of passenger cars $121 for not having winter tires as required.

"We don't have control over the weather conditions, but we can sure prepare ourselves with proper equipment and safe driving choices," said Cpl. Angela Kermer of the Squamish RCMP in a news release.
