The White House press secretary said Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump believes Canadians would be better severed economically and militarily if they joined the country.

According to a new Angus Reid poll, Canadians have very little to no interest in becoming the 51st state of the U.S.

American President Donald Trump and his administration have continued to push a narrative that Canadians would be better off joining the U.S., with the latest suggestion coming on Tuesday.

Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a White House press briefing that Trump believes Canadians will be better served economically and militarily if Canada were to become the 51st state.

The Angus Reid survey, released Wednesday, showed 60 per cent of 2,005 American respondents had no interest in seeing Canada join the U.S.

The data also showed 90 per cent of Canadian respondents believe Canada should not become part of the states.

As Trump and his administration continue to insist Canadians would benefit from joining the U.S., 54 per cent of Canadians think Trump is serious about his suggestion.

In a January survey, only 32 per cent believed the president was serious.

The Angus Reid survey also showed 79 per cent of Conservative party supporters in Canada would vote no on joining the U.S. in a referendum while 21 per cent would support the notion.

Just two per cent of Liberal supporters would agree to join the states while three per cent of NDP voters would be in favour.

The Angus Reid Institute says the survey was conducted online from Feb. 27 to March 3.
