The Nairn Falls Provincial Park day-use area will be open this winter, Tourism Pemberton announced on Friday, Dec. 18.

Thanks to a new volunteer partnership agreement between that organization, BC Parks, and Daniel Schranz Contracting Ltd., the parking lot will be plowed and open for day use Tuesday to Sunday.

The site will be closed Sunday from 5 p.m. to Monday at 5 p.m. to accommodate the Spud Valley Nordics, who have a volunteer partnership with BC Parks.

“We are excited to have reached an agreement with BC Parks to have the Nairn Falls yellow gate open this winter for safe public access and use,” said Mark Mendonca, president of Tourism Pemberton, in a release. “This will remove the potential danger of folks parking along Highway 99 that we’ve seen up until now and it also offers another sustainable outdoor winter recreational activity for our local community and future visitors alike.”

The public will have access to both the groomed cross-country ski tracks and the walking trail to Nairn Falls as well. Walkers, however, are asked to stay off the ski tracks and stay on trails. Dogs are not permitted on the tracks.

No overnight parking is allowed.

“We are all happy to have this agreement in place for the benefit of the entire community and all park visitors,” said Kevin Wagner, Pemberton area supervisor for BC Parks.

The changes are part of a trial agreement for the 2020/21 season.
