The Grinch has shown up early for Christmas and has stolen three candy cane light decorations from a family in Nanaimo.
The theft, which happened on Dec. 6 just after 10 p.m., was captured on video surveillance.
Jason Williamson is the homeowner and says he’s annoyed by the theft.
“My wife is really upset,” he says. “[It] might just be $15 of decorations but she really likes doing that every year and this is the first year in our new house.”
In the video, a woman exits the passenger side of a grey vehicle parked on the road. She then walks through the Williamson's driveway and heads directly for the string of lightbulb candy canes. She proceeds to yank one out of the ground.
A motion light turns on and the woman walks away for a few seconds, but turns back and continues to steal two more light-up candy canes.
The video appears to show the thief wearing a burgundy coloured sweater with a snowman on the back.
Nanaimo RCMP says the footage may assist in identifying the culprit.
“That is just so Grinch-like. Sadly, we will see more of these senseless petty thefts as we progress through the holiday season,” says Const. Gary O’Brien.
"Doesn’t this person realize that Santa knows when you’ve been bad or good? Others will also when they watch this video, and then, we expect our phone lines will light up with information on who the candy cane thief is.”
