Two 15-year-old boys building a fort on the side of Burnaby Mountain made a grisly discovery last week.
On Thursday evening, July 16, at about 6:30 p.m., police got a call from one of the boys and his mother, saying they believed they had discovered human remains in a forested area north of Forest Grove Park, according to Burnaby RCMP.
“The boy and his friend told police they had been building a fort when they unearthed the remains,” said police.
The integrated forensic identification service responded and confirmed the discovery of skeletal human remains.
The Burnaby RCMP serious crimes unit is investigating the incident, but police don’t believe there is a risk to public safety.
Neither police nor the B.C. Coroners Service would say anything about the identity of the remains or how long they had been there.
“It is very early in our investigation—our investigation will look to determine who died, and how, where, when and by what means they came to their unexpected death,” stated an email from the coroners service.
