The Whistler Field Hockey Club (WFHC) opened its season with third place at this year's Vancouver International Tournament due to a rather unorthodox turn of events.
"We did not win any of the games but we had a great weekend of play," explained Director of Operations Joelle Tiessen. "We finished fourth out of four teams after the first round but in the final round, playing for third, the other team could not field a full [roster] so they had to forfeit.
"This is tough [because] our season basically starts with this three-day tournament and all the Lower Mainland teams are finishing their season and thus are already in peak form. We had fun and were quite pleased to get third."
Regardless of what the scoreboard might say, the fledgling WFHC represented itself fairly well against more experienced opponents in Burnaby over the course of the co-ed contest.
Closer to home, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has agreed to paint regulation field hockey lines on the artificial turf at AVJ Field in Cheakamus Crossing to facilitate more realistic games. Club leaders hope to invite a few Vancouver-area organizations and the Squamish Field Hockey Club (SFHC) up to Whistler for some summer friendlies.
Weekly practices for all skill levels are now underway. Find out more at the WFHC website.
