Another running of the Janyk Cup presented by Hincks French Wealth Management at Odlum Brown is in the books, and Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) racers showed out.
Sienna Kimmins won gold in the girls' giant slalom with her time of one minute and 18.04 seconds. Bella Hertz grabbed silver (1:19.83) and Grouse Mountain's Valenda Ou took bronze (1:22.69).
On the boys' side it was Cole Trent emerging victorious (1:16.10) ahead of runner-up Jaxon Courcelles (1:16.35) and third-place participant Camille Pla of Grouse (1:17.07). Trent's grandfather grew up ski racing with Andrée Janyk, the late city councillor, fitness coach, sports lover and tireless volunteer whom the event is named after.
A press release reads: "Winning the Janyk Cup was an incredibly special moment for both Cole and Sienna. This race is deeply rooted in tradition and community, making their victories even more meaningful."
Three-time Olympic skier and former World Championships bronze medallist Mike Janyk is likewise proud. Mike and his older sister Britt (herself an Olympian) are part of Canada's "first family of skiing".
"The race is not only in honour of our family’s involvement and success in ski racing, but really rooted in my mom's, Andrée, absolute commitment to volunteerism and love for the sport," Janyk voiced in a release. "She was out, working every event we were in and building community along the way. So along with U12s getting to have fun ski racing, the Janyk Cup also celebrates the volunteers that make it happen. Get out, get involved, and have fun in the mountains."
