The Crankworx Whistler mountain biking festival has been cancelled in 2021.
The event, which started in Whistler in 2004 and evolved into a multi-stop international mountain biking festival series, aims to return in August 2022, according to a press release from Crankworx.
In the press release, Darren Kinnaird, managing director of Crankworx World Tour, states his regrets at the cancellation of the Whistler chapter of the series for the second year in a row.
“Mountain biking is both a career and a passion for many, so to lose an event that I know means so much to so many people, it’s been tough for everyone,” he said.
“We have been exploring our options for Crankworx Whistler 2021 since last summer. We held on to the possibility for as long as we could, while working on alternatives. The province of British Columbia is on a good track and is in the process of lifting restrictions, but unfortunately there’s not enough certainty or lead time to pull off the festival for this year.”
Along with Crankworx, 2022 will also bring back the Enduro World Series and the 10th anniversary of Red Bull Joyride to Whistler.
However, Crankworx will continue internationally this year with the festival kicking off in Innsbruck, Austria in mid-June and wrapping up in Rotorua, New Zealand in November.
