Young bear accessing homes, balconies in Cheakamus Crossing

The public is advised to lock doors and secure attractants like barbecues and pumpkins

A young bear has been spotted entering homes and climbing balconies in the Cheakamus Crossing area, the Conservation Officer Service (COS) reports. 

In an Oct. 31 wildlife alert from the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the COS relayed that it is currently doing education in the neighbourhood to prevent conflict with the bear. 

"Bears are currently searching for any final calories they can get before hibernation," the alert read. 

The COS advised the public to lock doors, including on balconies; ensure all barbecues are cleaned properly or locked away; and remove pumpkins and other attractants. 
 

Sightings of bears in or around properties can be reported to the COS by calling 1-877-952-7277.
