Wildfire burning near Pemberton grows to over 500 hectares

It is the largest of the “out of control” fires in the area.

A wildfire burning near Pemberton has grown to 558 hectares, according to the latest update from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). The fire at Birkenhead Lake is listed as “out of control”. It was started by a lightning strike and discovered on Aug. 5.

The blaze jumped from 360 hectares yesterday to 435 hectares this morning, and now 558 hectares as of Wednesday evening. It is the largest of four out of control wildfires in the Pemberton zone.

Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park was closed to the public on Aug. 8 to protect public safety. People have been warned to avoid the area.

The Rutherford Creek wildfire southeast of Pemberton grew to 56.1 hectares yesterday. The Village of Pemberton (VOP) thanked  BCWS for its efforts as firefighters continue to battle blazes in the local area.
