Whistler will honour Canada’s military veterans and servicemen and women at the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony, set to take place this Saturday in the village.
“On Nov. 11, 2023, veterans, Canadian military units, first responders, residents and visitors will gather at the Whistler Cenotaph as we pause, reflect and remember the more than 116,000 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to Canada,” read a release from organizers.
This years’ service will feature songs of remembrance sung by the Whistler Singers and Whistler Children’s Chorus, a helicopter fly-past, cannon firing, poetry readings, and a presentation of wreaths.
“Our veterans want Canadians to understand the price of freedom,” the release continued. “They are passing the torch to people of Canada, so the memory of their sacrifices will continue, and the values they fought for will live on in all of us.”
Held at the Whistler Cenotaph in Olympic Plaza, attendees are asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m. Sient sentries will be posted at 10:45 a.m., before the Veterans’ Parade and Colour Party sets off from the Ted Nebbeling Bridge at 10:53 a.m. That will be followed by the singing of the national anthem, the playing of “The Last Post,” and two minutes of silence, before the service of remembrance begins.
Any group or individuals wishing to place a wreath can make their own or purchase one from the Squamish Legion. Please contact Steve LeClair at [email protected] to arrange the placement of a wreath, or to volunteer.
The ceremony will also be livestreamed online at whistler.ca.
