Whistler issues warning as there is currently only about 30cm of clearance between the water and the CN rail bridge on the River of Golden Dreams.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) announced a mandatory portage for paddlers attempting to float down the River of Golden Dreams, taking effect immediately.

"Due to the presence of significant downstream hazards, a mandatory portage is in effect for the Tapley's section of the River of Golden Dreams from the Alta Lake fish weir to the lower CN rail bridge," read a release from the RMOW, June 28.

"Water levels on the [river] are very high and as a result there is no clearance underneath the lower CN Rail Bridge."

The release advises boaters wishing to paddle the river to either launch at the lower CN rail bridge or be prepared to make the approximately 600-metre portage from the Alta Lake fish weir to the bridge.

Due to the high water levels and fast water flow, the RMOW also advises people to make sure they have the proper safety gear when on the river and warns that local conservation officers will be "conducting random checks at the River of Golden Dreams" to make sure users have proper safety equipment.
