Updated: Two small wildfires burning in Whistler now under control

Lightning strikes ignited both blazes on Tuesday

A pair of spot fires that ignited in Whistler on Tuesday, June 27 are now under control, the BC Wildfire Service confirmed June 29.

Both fires still appear as active blazes on the BC Wildfire Service map. One is burning near Scotia Creek on Mount Sproatt, near the end of Stonebridge Drive. The other is reportedly smouldering near the Zanarchy trail on Whistler’s west side, north of Green Lake.

The fires measure in at less than 0.01 hectares, or 100 square metres, and are suspected to be lightning-caused. "When [fires] are that small, it looks like it was a single tree," Coastal Fire Centre information assistant Sam Bellion explained in a phone call on Wednesday.

Bellion confirmed an initial attack crew and helicopter were responding. “Given the fire behaviour and resources we’re comfortable that crews will be able to effectively suppress these fires,” she said at the time.

Those fires are the only two actively burning within Whistler’s municipal boundaries, but Bellion said that could change as the resort braces for the potential of more lightning strikes in the coming days.

“That would just be something to keep an eye out for, because when it's hot, when it's dry, and when we get that lightning, sometimes sparks can result from that," she said Wednesday.

Residents should stay vigilant and keep their eyes open for new smoke columns. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

fire ban remains in place for Whistler.
