Motorists driving between Whistler Village and Function Junction on Tuesday should expect delays, as the second day of road work on a section of Highway 99 gets underway.
A notice posted to Facebook by the Resort Municipality of Whistler on Friday, Aug. 13 said Miller Capilano would be paving the section of Highway 99 between Nordic Drive and Alta Vista on Aug. 16 and 17, warning drivers to plan accordingly and to "expect delays and [a] temporary intersection closure at Nordic Drive while paving is underway."
As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a trip from Function Junction to Whistler Village was estimated to take just over 20 minutes, while making the same trip southbound would take about 15 minutes.
Earlier, at around 10:45 a.m., map apps were predicting a trip from Function Junction to Creekside Village to take one hour, or one hour and 30 minutes to get to Whistler Village. A southbound trip from Whistler Village to Function Junction was estimated to take 48 minutes.
The RMOW directed inquiries about the project to B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation and those seeking more information to drivebc.ca. As of Tuesday morning, no information was available on Drive BC's site regarding the project or resulting congestion. The project similarly isn't listed on the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure's online project list.
Locals and visitors took to platforms like the Sea to Sky Road Conditions Facebook group on Monday to complain about lengthy delays while travelling through the area on Aug. 16—for example, a round trip from Pinecrest to Alpine took one driver four hours, while it took another traveller 30 minutes to drive two kilometres.
A bypass is not available, due to the ongoing closure of West Side Road.
The paving is expected to wrap up today at 5 p.m.
