Rainbow Park is on track for a June 2024 opening, according to the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW).
Rainbow has been closed for construction since June 5, as the RMOW completes a major upgrade to the popular local park on the western shore of Alta Lake.
Some of the work completed in recent months includes:
- The ground, or subgrades, have been prepared for the lawn, trails and other park features to be added on top;
- Three docks were installed this week. In the photos you can see the newly upgraded dog dock, the new middle dock which will have the hammock dock attached to it, and also the north dock that was new in 2021;
- The beach now has sand;
- Irrigation installation began this week;
- Next week crews will place the paving concrete and the concrete for underneath furniture;
- Crews are working on connecting the washrooms to the main wastewater system, instead of a septic tank.
"As you can see, the new docks are more accessible for wheelchair users and include railings for user safety. The dock design is also better for the ecological conditions on our shoreline," a municipal communications official said.
"Since we’re moving into fall, the next few weeks of work could be impacted by weather. The fall weather will also determine when construction will stop for winter—our plan is to wrap up at the end of October."
The RMOW plans to reopen the Valley Trail and other paths within Rainbow Park for winter, though that also depends on the weather.
Plans for the park upgrades were first revealed in January of this year, which led to a small revolt among locals voicing displeasure with the designs.
The RMOW went back to the drawing board, and incorporated the public's feedback before beginning construction in June.
