Photos: Northern lights glowing over Whistler's peaks

If you turned north and looked up to the sky on Friday night, there's a good chance you may have seen the aurora borealis glistening

If you turned north and looked up to the sky in Whistler after 10 p.m. on Friday night, Aug. 4, there's a good chance you may have seen a streak or two of light dancing between the stars.

The aurora borealis was out in full force (at least by Whistler's standards) this weekend, with locals lowering their cameras' shutter speeds to capture the unmistakable green and purple glow of the northern lights.

According to Space.com, the natural phenomenon occurs when energized particles from the sun slam into Earth's atmosphere, only to be redirected to the north and south poles by Earth's magnetic field.

Jess Murray initially spotted the faint streaks of light glistening above her home on Castle Drive in Nordic. She snapped a few photos from her balcony before venturing out to Wayside Park for a better view of the spectacle.

"It was something I have always dreamed of seeing and for it to come upon us so randomly was so amazing!" she said.
