Photos: Grizzly bear in Whistler

'The great bear’s return is a testament to decades of conservation efforts along the Sea to Sky...'

These photos of a majestic grizzly bear in the Whistler area were shot by the Grizzly Bear Foundation's Taylor Green.

Green captured the images when the grizzly was roaming a region south of the resort in the spring of 2022.

It's unclear if it's the same grizzly that was tranquilized and relocated from the Whistler Valley on June 3 of this year—but either way, grizzlies are making a comeback in Whistler.

"Grizzly bears are one of the slowest-reproducing land mammals in North America. The recent decision to end the hunt across B.C. has not caused the increase in recent sightings here in Whistler," writes the foundation's executive director Nicholas Scapillati in a letter to the editor in this week's Pique.

"The great bear’s return is a testament to decades of conservation efforts along the Sea to Sky by the B.C. government, First Nations and conservation organizations, including Coast to Cascades Grizzly Bear Initiative. The next big step in grizzly recovery is our challenge of learning to live with these magnificent creatures."
