The Pemberton Stockcar Association cancelled its planned Sept. 9 race due to a series of unforeseen circumstances.

Pemberton’s stockcar race scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9 has been cancelled due to a series of unforeseen circumstances, organizers said.

The Pemberton Stockcar Association said low competitor counts and GranFondo traffic restrictions on Highway 99 led to the difficult decision. Thousands of cyclists will make their way up the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler on Saturday, Sept. 9. The race will bring significant traffic delays, particularly on Highway 99.

The Pemberton Stockcar Association told followers the event would not have been financially viable given the circumstances. Organizers took to Facebook to break the news to disappointed locals. “I regret to inform all of our spectators, competitors and volunteers that we are having to cancel this weekend,” they wrote.

The association’s next scheduled event will be on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The association was also forced to cancel a race on Saturday, Aug. 12 due to unforeseen circumstances. On Wednesday, Aug, 9 they broke the news on Facebook.

“The board of directors has worked tirelessly to get this season off the ground, so the decision did not come easily,” organizers wrote at the time.
