WHO: Mike Svob
WHERE: Joels Restaurant
WHEN: July 5
Joels Restaurant will play host to a special evening in conjunction with the Whistler Arts Experience. World renowned B.C. artist, Mike Svob, will be the featured guest, bringing along slides to tell the story of his 20 year career and artwork.
"(Mikes) been coming to Whistler for 25 years himself, so hes sort of a local. Hes been coming to the mountains since before there was anyone here," explains Michelle Kirkegaard of the adele-campbell Fine Arts Gallery.
Much of Svobs work reflects landscapes such as the Whistler Valley but also ventures to the back alleys of streets around the world. Svobs career has included 20 foot murals, paintings for royalty and workshops for the up-and-coming. Svobs trademark use of bold, vibrant colour has also earned him many awards and has made him a highly-collected artist around the globe.
"Mike really lives these canvasses. Hes really done all the hikes and been to all these places," adds Kirkegaard.
Svob has always been well received at previous showings in the area and organizers are hoping his adventurous spirit will continue appeal to Whistler locals.
"This event, and all of Arts Experience, is really for the locals," stresses Kirkegaard. "Everything is reasonably priced and is showcasing high quality talent. The arts dont have the big sponsors like snowboarding, so were really counting on locals to come out and show their support."
Tickets for the July 5 dinner are $65 and reservations are required. Call The Whistler Arts Council for more information at 938-0498.
