Amidst of a flood of positive reviews from across Canada, Tonight… Piaf! is about to hit Whistler.
Deep and captivating, this highly acclaimed theatrical production takes an in-depth look at the soul of one of the last century’s most passionate female singers, Edith Piaf.
Set in the ballroom of New York’s Waldorf Astoria in the early ’60s, the audience is drawn through a variety of emotions that leads to the understanding that the last performance of Piaf’s life was not only her most painful, but also her most moving and honest.
Written by Joelle Rabu and Ted Galay, Tonight… Piaf! Sets out to answer some questions about Edith Piaf’s mysterious life. From a difficult background, struggling on the streets of France, to her overnight success and catapult to fame, it’s an excellent portrayal of hwy this woman sang the way she did.
Rabu co-wrote the script but the internationally accredited singer-actress, who recently performed for Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, also plays Piaf. Her performances have received overwhelming positive reviews.
"If you close your eyes, you’d almost swear it was Piaf," one reviewer wrote.
Both of Rabu’s parents were French and they raised their daughter "a la francaise," so she had the songs of Piaf engraved in her heart from an early age.
Tonight… Piaf! is presented by the Whistler Community Arts Council as part of its spring series of performances. The arts council has been trying to bring this performance to Whistler for more than 10 years. With cabaret-style seating at Our Lady of the Mountains community centre, the audience can enjoy a bottle of wine, a loaf of bread and of course, Piaf.
