New Audain exhibit spotlights Indigenous women carvers

"Curve!" is co-curated by Dana Claxton and Curtis Collins, and opens Nov. 23

An upcoming Audain Art Museum exhibit will showcase the women who have contributed to the wood and argillite-carving aspects of Northwest Coast art.

Curve! is slated to feature more than 125 poles, panels, masks, bowls, and other sculptures co-curated by Dana Claxton and Dr. Curtis Collins. These works will be on loan from public and private collections across Canada and the United States.

The exhibition will focus on a selection of carvers active from the 1950s to present day, highlighting the pivotal role of women artists within the larger tradition of Indigenous carving in British Columbia.

Iconic artists Ellen Neel, Freda Diesing, and Doreen Jensen serve as historic context for this exhibit, as their careers paved a way for future generations of carvers.
