"Aye Aye AI", a play by Stephen Vogler, premiered at the Point Artist-Run Centre on Aug. 9, 2024.

After a successful premiere at last month's Flag Stop Theatre & Arts FestivalAye Aye AI is getting a dry run at the Maury Young Arts Centre.

The play was written by local author and musician Stephen Vogler, artistic director at the Point Artist-Run Centre (PARC). Co-directed by Kathy Daniels and Carla Fuhre of Squamish’s Between Shifts Theatre, Aye Aye AI revolves around a theatre company in need of a new script and the government funding that will keep them afloat. Main characters Sarah, Trueman, Liz and Dwight settle on the obvious solution: employ Open Source AI’s Chat GPT to write it for them.

Cast members David Francis, Susan Hutchinson, Emma Strong and Andrew Wood portray eight roles between them, and their performances (as well as the direction of Daniels and Fuhre) have elicited positive reviews.

“A very funny and thought-provoking piece," says Vancouver actor Jacques Lalonde (X-Files, 21 Jump Street, Sesame Street) in a press release. "I loved the characters. I loved the robots. We were laughing and talking about it for hours afterwards.”

North Vancouver playwright John McGie (The Chair Series) calls it: “a fun frolic into the exploration of where creativity begins and technology ends. Aye Aye AI is a willing catalyst for a good discussion.”

Vancouver actor and fringe artist Cecilia O’Day (Young Widow) remarks: “Aye Aye Al is a charming play about creativity and technology...with a talented cast and directors, this timely production is not to be missed!”

Aye Aye AI runs Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Maury Young. Get tickets here.
