Weeks after having its Dec. 1 world premiere at the Whistler Film Festival (WFF), 500 Days in the Wild has been chosen by viewers as the recipient of 2023's Audience Award.
The documentary chronicles the harrowing and intensely personal odyssey of its maker, Dianne Whelan, a woman in her 50s with no extreme athletic background who spent six years (or about 2190 days) traversing all 24,000 kilometres of the Trans-Canada Trail: a vast network of land and water pathways from St. John's, Nfld. to the Arctic to Victoria, B.C.
"Thank you Whistler Film Festival! We are honoured and delighted to receive this Audience Award,” said Whelan in a press release. “It's very gratifying to know that the story has touched so many hearts. We're looking forward to bringing the film to many more audiences next year in theatres across Canada, as well as with our release on Paramount+."
