Two popular Canadian rail-tour companies have been ranked among the best trains in the world.
For its 34th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey, Condé Nast Traveler asked readers to weigh in on their favourite trains in the world and two Canadian ones were included in the top 15.
A Japanese deluxe sleeping car excursion train took the top honour. Seven Stars, operated by Kyushu Railway, offers elegant designs that the company says, "boasts an exquisite blend of traditions – Japanese and Western." The Lounge Car also offers a bar counter along with sofas and swivel chairs where passengers can relax and enjoy live piano performances.
Rocky Mountaineer, a luxury Canadian tour operator that offers scenic train rides across North America, placed second overall. The company is best known for offering awe-inspiring journeys through the Rocky Mountains. In addition to spectacular scenery, the five-star onboard experience includes daily meal and evening turn-down service as well as attended staff that have a detailed knowledge of all the areas the train moves through.
All guest rooms are equipped with modern conveniences including a private three piece en-suite, plush bathrobes, luxury amenities and an in-room safe.
Another Canadian rail-tour company made the top 15 list, too. The Royal Canadian Pacific, which also offers spellbinding trips through the Rocky Mountains, came in the #14 spot. The company boasts a fleet of fully restored vintage Canadian Pacific Railway carriages and customized onboard experiences.
All guest rooms are equipped with modern conveniences including a private three piece en-suite, plush bathrobes, luxury amenities and an in-room safe.
