Never flown in a small airplane? That's about to change for women and girls in Squamish on March 9, when they have the opportunity to take a free flight with Glacier Air.

"So many women never consider a career in aviation or have the opportunity to see themselves as pilots. I want to help change that," Colette Morin, the owner and chief flight instructor of Glacier Air, said in a press release.

The company, based at the Squamish Airport, has been part of Fly It Forward since 2011.

Last year alone, they helped 78 women fly for the first time. Every year, the event honours a woman who made aviation history. A Hollywood stunt pilot from the 1930s, "Pancho" Lowe Barnes will be honoured this year.

Guest speakers include two women in the aviation field.

Since Morin took over Glacier Air in 2001, 123 pilots have earned their wings through the company. Eleven per cent of those pilots were women, which Morin noted is above the six per cent national average.

Flights will be on a first-come-first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 9.
