The family of a 40-year-old Vancouver man charged with breaking and entering, unlawful confinement, choking and extortion could lose their home if he breaches bail.

On April 2, Ping Feng Jiang appeared before Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Susan Sangha for a bail hearing.

Sangha ultimately released him based on a promise from his parents to put up a $100,000 surety to ensure he abides by bail release conditions.

The charges relate to alleged Vancouver incidents on March 12.

While the contents of a bail hearing are covered by a publication ban to protect an accused’s right to a fair trial, the results of such hearings can be published.

In Jiang’s case, Sangha agreed his parents promised to pay the $100,000 surety based on the value of their home.

He must also not contact the complainant and several other people, and isn't allowed to possess weapons.

Jiang remains in custody.

When he realized his family was in court, he pressed his face against the prisoner’s dock glass window, his eyes wide.  When he tried to talk to them, defence lawyer Kevin Westell motioned for him to be quiet.

Jiang must also wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and live at the family home.

While Jiang agreed to the conditions in English, the proceedings were done with the aid of a Cantonese interpreter.
