Accused B.C. cop slasher asks judge for a CT scan

Two uniformed officers were patrolling Vancouver's Downtown Eastside on March 4 when one of them was stabbed in the leg.

A man accused of aggravated assault in the slashing of a Vancouver police officer asked a judge to get him a CT scan April 2.

Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Susan Sangha told Solaris Onatta Running Dey such an order is not within her powers.

Dey, 29, is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and assault of a peace officer with a weapon.

Dey told the judge he needed the medical scan for an emergency.

“I need a CT scan on my chest,” he said. “ I’m fairly certain I have, like, a problem with my lung and they don’t take me very seriously here in the jail.”

“I can’t help you with that, Mr. Dey,” Sangha said.

Two uniformed officers were patrolling Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside around 7 p.m. on March 4 when one of them was stabbed in the leg.

A surveillance video submitted to Glacier Media shows a man walking behind two officers on the crosswalk at Main and East Hastings streets.

He can be seen leaning down and lunging towards the officer’s leg, slashing him multiple times before running off.

“Random senseless violence is intolerable and certain people need to be incarcerated,” Vancouver Police Department Chief Const. Adam Palmer said March 4.

The court had earlier heard Dey fired lawyer Janine Sicotte and is in the process of finding a new lawyer.

Lawyer Deborah Carpentier spoke for Dey before Sangha and said he had mentioned lawyer Gloria Ng.

The case returns to court April 9.
