A new roll-in, roll-out 106-stall truck stop on Hwy. 17, near the Port Mann Bridge will give tired truckers a place to get off the road and take a break.
The North Surrey Truck Parking Facility opens this week and will feature fencing, 24-hour security, cameras, a sani dump and washrooms and showers for drivers.
The province kicked in $17 million for the project, along with funding from the federal government.
“Providing adequate parking facilities for commercial drivers to rest and recharge is vital to enhance safety in B.C.’s commercial trucking industry,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association in a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure news release.
“This is a great facility that I am confident will be extensively used.”
Earle was also happy to hear that the province is exploring additional parking options for commercial vehicles as it improves the Hwy. 1 corridor through the Fraser Valley.
For Randeep Sarai, MP for Surrey Centre, on behalf of Sean Fraser, federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, the new parking will allow truckers “to refresh and recharge, ensuring they can continue their journeys efficiently and safely to reach their destinations. We are committed to continuing investment in projects like this one to promote economic growth and build more resilient communities.”
