Pemberton Fire Rescue raced to prevent a U-Haul fire from spreading to the forest this week.

The Duffey Lake Road was closed briefly Monday after a U-Haul truck caught fire. The blaze was reportedly caused by the vehicle’s over-heated brakes. It had spread through the tightly packed cargo area making it difficult to extinguish properly.

BC Wildfire Service and Pemberton Fire Rescue raced to the scene north of the In-shuck-ch Forest Service Road to stop the fire spreading to the surrounding forest.

Pemberton Fire Rescue Chief Cameron Adams said the tricky fire was contained to the vehicle.

“Pemberton Fire Rescue responded with an engine to extinguish the fire and another apparatus for water support," he said. "The fire was contained to the U-Haul and did not spread into the surrounding forest.”

Cpl. James Gilmour with the Pemberton RCMP said nobody was injured in the fire.

A vehicle caught fire on the switchbacks north of the In-shuck-ch FSR,” he said. “There were no injuries and the fire was extinguished before spreading into the forest. The vehicle was towed later that evening.”
